Where the Community Creates the Vision . . .

On August 19, 2004, Mayor Danny Jones appointed an eight member committee, chaired by Mary Jean Davis, to explore ways to make Charleston’s Riverfront more appealing to the community. Mayor Jones informed the committee that their purpose is to review all ideas from developers and Council Members, as well as public input as to what steps need taken to make the Riverfront more attractive and useful for the residents of Charleston.

On November 9, 2004, the Riverfront Committee, in partnership with Charleston Area Alliance, held a well attended Community Visioning session at the Charleston Civic Center. The session's purpose was to provide for public input on a vision for the Riverfront. Common themes that were developed at the meeting can be viewed here.

On May 2005, the Riverfront Committee placed a national request for qualifications to start the process of selecting a professional consultant to develop a Master Riverfront Plan. Nineteen consultants answered the call. The Committee narrowed the list and performed interviews with seven firms. Sasaki Associates Inc., was unanimously chosen by the Committee.

On July 21, 2005, the Army Corp of Engineers held a public meeting at the Civic Center to discuss the condition of the banks along the Kanawha River.

On July 28, 2005, Sasaki held a public meeting to express their understanding of the project to date, and to gather additional public comment to guide them through the design process.
