CURBSIDE RECYCLING PROGRAM
The City of Charleston participates in a curbside
recycling program. This program allows for certain items to be picked up on
“recycling days” throughout the city. The items that are collected for recycling
include: bi-metal cans, aluminum cans, plastics (except plant trays and plant
containers) newspapers, magazines and telephone books. These items are to be
placed in the recycling bins provided by the city and placed at the curb on the
appropriate day for the area in which you live. The dates and areas are listed
below.
RECYCLING COLLECTION

Black plastic bags should be
used for the containment of household waste, trash, and other refuse. The
clear plastic bags are for yard waste only (grass, leaves, weeds, plant
prunings and light brush).

For yard waste, place only
vegetative material in the clear plastic bags. Place bagged yard waste at the
curbside. Yard waste will be picked up every Monday when it is called-in.
Designated days for yard waste pick-up include every Monday as well as every
day of the 2nd and 4th full weeks of each month on a normal truck route.
What do we pick up?

Newspaper/Paper: This includes
all magazines, office grade paper, inserts, junk mail and boxboard cardboard
(this includes cereal boxes with the paper liners removed). Place these in the
recycling bin and/or clear yard waste bags.

Aluminum Cans: Rinse the cans
and then place in clear plastic bags.

Bi-Metal or Tin Cans: Rinse the
cans and place in clear plastic bags.

Plastics: #'s 1,2,3,5 and 7.
Remove the caps and rinse, flatten and place in clear plastic bags.
What do we not accept?

Corrugated cardboard, glass,
plastic foam, styrofoam, colored plastic bags, wax coated paper, shrink-wrap,
garment bags, plastic toys with non-plastic parts, plant containers and
plastics #'s 4 and 6.

Trees and yard waste cut by
private contractors or trash and debris from job sites performed by
contractors or owners with a building permit. Trash and debris from jobs not
requiring a building permit and not performed by a contractor will be picked
up by the City of Charleston.
What about white goods? Tires?
Yard Waste? Appliances?

White goods (white goods or
refrigerators, washers, etc.), are picked up every week on regular scheduled garbage days. These item need to be called in for pick-up, please contact the Refuse Collection department if
you have ANY of these items for pick up at 348-6831 or 348-6832.

Tires will be picked up on Friday and Saturday. Tires need to be called in for pick-up, please contact the Refuse Collection department for pick up at 348-6831 or 348-6832.

Any miscellaneous items such as recycling and yard waste will be picked up on the regular scheduled garbage pick-up day.
PLEASE SET OUT ALL ITEMS TO BE COLLECTED BY 6:30 A.M. ON YOUR COLLECTION DAY.
NO ITEMS SHALL BE PLACED AT CURBSIDE BEFORE 7:00 P.M. ON THE EVENING PRIOR TO
PICK UP.
