PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
The City of
Charleston Public Works includes the departments of City Engineering,
Refuse Collection, Street Maintenance, Traffic Engineering, Public
Grounds and Equipment Maintenance.
Don Carr is the Director of Public Works
and is assisted by the respective directors of these departments.
Curbside Recycling

The City of Charleston has established a twice per month curbside
recycling collection program. This program replaces the current
weekly collection
Refuse Collection -

This department is responsible for the garbage collection in the city
limits and is directed by Cleophus Booth. As well, this department includes a recycling unit that deals
with the city recycling program.
Street Maintenance
This department
oversees the maintenance of the city streets under the guidance of Don
Carr including cleaning and repair and storm water drainage problems.
Traffic Engineering
This
department, headed by George Robson, deals with city street lights,
street signs, street striping, and curb painting.
Public Grounds
Grass cutting of city right-of-ways, shrub and flower planting
around the city and other public ground issues are overseen by Harley Goodwin.
Equipment Maintenance
Gary
A. Smith leads this department which takes care of all city vehicles
with the exception of the Charleston Fire Department.
