Citizen Police Academy XV (15)
MODIFIED Course Outline – As of Feb.18, 2010
 
Original Week 1 & Week 2, Feb. 9th & Feb. 16thwere canceled due to snow and school closed on both dates.  What had been listed as Week 3, Feb, 23, is now Week 1, and the rest of the schedule has been modified so we can still feature the same presenters, though some content may be cut.  The graduation date (Week 11) has also been moved to May 11.
 
Week 1:  Tuesday Feb. 23rd   6:40-9:20pm, Training/Conference Room, Dickinson St.
·                     Overview (what’s in store for the class, requirements of class members)
·                     Organizational Structure, Roles of Mayor, Chief of Police, Command Staff.  CPD’s  Departmental Mission and Core Values.  Policing in past & present.
·                      Prosecutor guest speaker: Overview of the legal system, working relationship of officers  & prosecutors.
·                     Civil Service Commission guest speaker:  Arrest, Search, Seizure, Citizen’s Rights, and limitations upon police from violating constitutional rights.
·                     Training and Development of Officers (requirements, screening, training, probation, etc.).
 
Week 2:  Tuesday Mar. 2nd  TOUR DAY – Locations/Times Change - You must sign-up:
Daytime Tour:  11:00am-12 noon for tour of Metro Emergency Operations Center (911), at 200 Peyton Way (Off Parkway Rd., Southridge Ctr.)
●          meet again at 1:00pm, beginning at Muni. Court for City Hall Tour (Park in City Garage off Court St.). City Hall:  Welcome at Munic. Court by Judge S. Taylor; followed by tour of Admin., Media Rm., Crim. Investig., Patrol, Booking, Records., Prop. & Evidence Divs.
Evening Tour:  6:15pm-8:15pmfor City Hall Tour, beginning at Muni. Court (Park in City Garage off Court St.), Welcome at Municipal Court by Judge S. Taylor; followed by tour of Admin.. Media Rm., Crim Investig., Patrol, Booking, Records., Prop. & Evidence Divs.
●          Meet again at 8:45pm-9:45pm for tourof Metro Emergency Operations Center (911), at 200 Peyton Way (Off Parkway Rd., Southridge Ctr.).
 
Week 3:  Tuesday Mar. 9th  6:40-9:20pm, Training/Conference Room, Dickinson St.
·                     Special Enforcement Unit: a presentation on the assignments & experiences of S.E.U. 
·                     SEU Activities on street-level drug dealing, gangs, prostitution, etc. 
                                           

Week 4:  Tuesday Mar. 16th  6:40-9:20pm,Training/Conference Room, Dickinson St.
●          Drugs of Abuse:  Identification and affects of illegal drugs 
●          MDENT:  Duties of Metro Drug Enforcement Network Team, assignments and methods of operation of drug investigations
 
NO CLASS on Tuesday Mar. 23rd due to Kanawha Co. Schools’ Spring Break
(We will start offering Patrol ride-alongs this week)
 
Week 5: Tuesday Mar. 30th 6:40-9:20pm,Training/Conference Room, Dickinson St.
·                     Highway Safety/Seatbelt Enforcement Program, child safety seat law, DUI Investigation, field sobriety testing and breath-alcohol content determination
·                     Traffic & Aggressive Driving Enforcement, Radar speed enforcement. Police Motorcycles & training, routing/directing traffic, traffic stop scenarios
·                     Crash (Accident) Investigation, equipment and techniques
  
 
Optional (Week 5½?) – Must sign-up:  Friday Eve. Apr. 2nd {AND} Saturday Apr . 3rd 
Sign-up for available times in 1-hr. time slots for CPD Simulator Training, with video shooting scenarios and driving simulations.  Takes place at the Simulator Room, Training Div.
Week 6:*Tuesday Apr. 6th   6:30-9:30pm, (RE-LOCATE –FOP Lodge, on Woodrums Lane) (Ride-alongs scheduled through rest of week)
·                     S.W.A.T. and special training.  Display & demo of equipment and capabilities.
·                     K-9 training, utilization, policy and procedures, video and K-9 live demonstration.
 
Week 7:  Tuesday Apr. 13th 6:40-9:20pm, Training/Conference Room, Dickinson St.
(Ride-alongs scheduled through rest of week)
·                     Criminal Investigation:  Crimes against persons, crimes against property
·                     Investigative procedures, interview and interrogation, court preparation and testimony, scenarios or case examples from personal experiences.                   
·                     Use of Force and Officer Safety, overview of police weapons and tools, restraints, officer alertness and rudimentary defensive tactics.
 
Week 8: Tuesday Apr. 20th 6:30-9:20pmVictim assistance and available support for victims of violent crimes
·                     Local MADD Representative – advocates for victims of DUI crashes
·                     Domestic Violence:  protective laws/orders, police response, and legal procedures
 
Week 9:  Tuesday Apr. 27th 6:30-9:20pm, Training/Conference Room, Dickinson St.
(Ride-alongs scheduled through rest of week)
·                     CID Crime Scene Unit /Forensics, finger prints, DNA, protection of scene, trace evidence & its preservation
·                     Professional Standards - responsibilities of PSU, conducting internal investigations
 
Week 10: Tuesday May 4th  6:30-9:20pm, Training/Conference Room, Dickinson St.
(Ride-alongs scheduled through rest of week)
·                     Citizen Groups:  VIPS/NAO, Charleston Public Safety Council, Neighborhood Watch.
·                     Public Education:   Crime Prevention. Problem Solving, Safety Education
·                     School Services:  Safety City, CORE, DARE, GREAT, PRO & Safe Schools.    
 
Week 11:  Tuesday May 10th  6:30-8:45pm, GRADUATION of Class #12 (Location pending, may be held at the Charleston Civic Center, or we may re-locate to a river-front demo location)
·                     Refreshments, socialize:  family/guests invited. 
·                     Mayor, Chief, Staff & Patrol Division representatives, K-9 team or Dive Team featured 
(this may be a different and more dynamic graduation than in the past, especially if we can re-locate to possible river site). 
·                     Congratulatory messages, sharing of experiences, presentation of certificates, photo, pin.
