The Charleston Human Resources Department strives to attact personnel to city service who possess the highest ability and integrity; to provide administrative support to city personnel consisting of promotions, transfers, layoffs, removal, discipline, classification, compensation and benefit provision; to foster and maintain an equitable, fair and safe employment environment through it's internal policies as well as by adhering to all relevant employment and wage laws.

The overall objective of the Human Resources Department of the City of Charleston is to attract and retain a qualified workforce representative of a diverse community in order to deliver services to all citizens of Charleston.

The responsibilities are implemented through Human Resources Director, Judy King, Civil Service Commission, and appropriate City Council committees and independent boards.
