The Engineering Department oversees several engineering services
for the City of Charleston and provides information on retaining
walls, storm drainage, city right of ways, and street design.

RETAINING WALLS
· Retaining wall improvement and design
· Public information regarding condition, status, and historical
information on streets, alleys and retaining walls.
STORM DRAINAGE
The Engineering Department provides surveys, designs, cost
estimates and plans for construction of storm drains. In
addition, Engineering provides the following additional
information:
· Maintenance and improvements to the storm drainage systems.
· Storm drains to separate stormwater from sanitary sewers.
· Storm drains for residential street paving.
· Grit chambers for removal of solids from the stormwater.
· Flood control projects.
· Investigate drainage complaints.
· Review and inspect private construction projects, including
subdivisions.
· Ensure compliance with City's drainage requirements.
· Determine adequacy of erosion control techniques.
· Ensure compliance with requirements of watershed management
organizations.
· Submit proposals for capital improvement projects.
· Develop projects and programs to improve the quality of
stormwater runoff as required by the NPDES Stormwater Permit.
· Maintain records of location and depth of as-built storm
drains.
· Maintain and provide flood zone information.
RIGHT OF WAY INFORMATION
The Engineering Department is responsible for obtaining land for
use as street, alley or other purposes consistent with vehicle
or pedestrian transportation. It also obtains easements for
storm sewer purposes and temporary construction easements.
