Saturday--A Day Learning

Sat, 05/08/2010 - 6:32pm

Today was an eventful and informative first full day in our Sister City.  We were able to see and ask questions about three joint Slovakian and European Union tourism projects beginning at a water flume exhibition and ending in a mining town.
The first stop was a water flume exhibition. This project showcases the country’s rich historical lumber industry by giving an exciting demonstration for visitors to see the transportation of wood through a 2,045 meter flume.

The next stop was at a developing ski and recreation area.  This facility is being transformed from a seasonal, limited-use ski facility to a modern, year round recreation center for locals and tourists alike.  Resort services include skiing, a full ropes course, bobsled ride and parasailing!

Our final stop was to a town called Spania Dolina, which means "Valley of the Miners." The town has striking similarities with West Virginia.  This town has a population of 90 people and a strong mining past dating back several centuries. Spania Dolina is working diligently to preserve and share its history with others.  A beautiful church on top of the hill honors the town’s mining history with paintings of their patron Saint of Miners (Saint Kliment), ore displayed throughout the church, flags representing the mining families and a yearly service with pageantry that commemorates the miner’s contributions to the town and country. The pride held for miners is something both Slovakia and West Virginia share in common.
