The City of Charleston Office of the City Attorney employs two full-time attorneys who act as the attorneys for the City of Charleston and its officials.  It serves the City by dispensing legal advice to the Mayor, City Council and various city departments and the representation of the City in court actions, including:

  • Damage claims against the City.

  • Allegations of ordinance unconstitutionality.

  • Civil rights actions.

  • Suits for collection of taxes.

  • Enforcement of Zoning, Building and Traffic code ordinances.

  • Damage claims by the City against persons who have damaged City property.

The Office of the City Attorney represents the City as a municipal corporation in development transactions and operational matters, as well as being responsible for certain filing and revivals of liens and the drafting or approval of proposed ordinances, resolutions, deeds, leases, contracts, legal pleadings, and briefs.
